Haile T. Debas Diversity Fellowship

Haile-Debas Announcement

The UCSF Department of Surgery Haile T. Debas Diversity Scholarship was established to support the Department of Surgery's goal of building diversity, equity, and inclusion for the future while promoting the sense of belonging.

The General Surgery Residency Training Program has a long tradition of training academic general surgeons. Participating in a 4th year sub-internship at UCSF provides the student with the opportunity to experience first-hand this environment of clinical excellence, inquiry, and investigation.

To help support this opportunity, the Scholarship provides a stipend of $2,500, usable towards tuition, transportation, housing, and incidental expenses. Recipients will be selected based on academic career potential. A limited number of stipends will be awarded during each academic year.

Application Requirements

  • Applicants must be in good academic standing and actively progressing toward a Doctor of Medicine degree at an affiliated LCME-accredited institution.
  • Complete a VSAS application for a surgery elective at UCSF. Include a personal statement as well as a letter of recommendation written by a faculty mentor. These two items may be uploaded to VSAS as supplemental documents or sent via email to: https://ucsf.app.box.com/f/488af0681025450ea182ce137c71af1f (file saved as Last Name, First Name).
