Medical student education is a top priority for the Department of Surgery at UCSF. Opportunities include a wide variety of core and elective courses, as well as clerkships for UCSF and visiting students at all major participating hospital sites.

Courses

Foundations 1 (1st & 2nd Year)

  • Surgery Interest Group – series of lunchtime lectures, technical skills sessions and elective courses organized by students interested in pursuing a career in Surgery.
  • Surgery 160 — elective courses for 1st year medical students.

Foundations 2  (3rd & 4th Year)

  • Surgery 110 — 8 week inpatient surgery clerkship promises to give medical students the surgical knowledge and clinical skills needed as a physician, regardless of their ultimate choice in specialties. Participating sites include Parnassus/Mt. Zion/Mission Bay, ZSFG, SFVAMC, CPMC and Highland Hospital.
  • Surgery 130 – 2 week clinical immersion experiences (CIEX) for the new Bridges curriculum.
  • Surgery 140 -  4 week senior electives in all surgical subspecialties are offered to 4th year medical students  that have an interest in applying for a surgical residency. The student will be an integral part of the surgical team.
  • Visiting Student Program - Surgery 140 electives are offered to visiting students at 9 hospital sites throughout the Greater Bay Area.
